No seats, no Spitz, no problem . . .

Well, I guess we’ve passed the point of no return here at Strickler Planetarium.  The workers from Ash Enterprises arrived this Sunday to begin disassembling our star projector and console.  The work went so quickly that I didn’t have time to snap any pictures until they were completely gone.  Now the salvageable pieces have been boxed up and mailed off, and the non-salvageable pieces have been thrown away.  Campus workers also came in and removed the old carpet and the shelf that ran along the bottom of the dome and held the now-unnecessary slide projectors.  They also began putting up the cabinets in the workroom.  (It’s been a busy couple of days.)  The workers from Ash remain and are currently cleaning and painting the interior of the dome.

Next on the list of things to do is install the new carpet and the seats before the new star projector arrives.  But first . . . tonight’s lunar eclipse!

  1. I have been coming to Strickler for years and while I’m sad to see the familiar setting leave, I am glad to see Administration investing in science and the planetarium. It is a huge benefit to students, kids, and the overall community.

Will any renovation be done to the exterior of the building?
Will the new seat configuration be all facing in one direction, or will it circle the projector like before?

Thanks for the updates and keep up the good work!

  2. Glad to hear from a long-time visitor! Yes, we’re quite excited about the impact that the new set-up will have for the community. Many students and schools in the area don’t have the time or resources to make it up to a place like Adler. We hope that with the new digital projector, we’ll be able to provide a similar educational experience here in Bourbonnais.

No major renovations are planned for the exterior, but that doesn’t mean some cosmetic changes aren’t in the works. Keep your eyes out!

The new seating configuration will be facing one direction. This is more suitable for the digital format and will allow the planetarium to be more functional as a classroom as well.

Thanks for the comments and questions. Keep checking back to see the work in progress and be sure to visit us when we open again in the summer.
